Ben says this weekend after having his friend from school come and spend the night, “No one has ever asked me to spend the night at their house. J—– says his mom is over protective and is worried about having me come and spend the night. She’s afraid that that I’ll get sick while I’m at his house and she won’t know what to do.”
“Well, Ben, she doesn’t know you very well. When you explain your health to someone, it sounds really scary. But once they get to know you, they realize that it just sounds scarier than it is. One day, you will get to spend the night at a friend’s house. Until then, we will just keep asking everyone to spend the night at your house.”
But it broke my heart. He has spent the night away from home, but always with family or for a church activity. Never for that normal right of passage for every 10 year old boy . . . to spend the night at a friend’s house.
